Negative Calorie Foods

Negative calorie foods are foods that burn more calories than they provide. Food scientists would argue that there are no such things as ‘negative calorie’ foods. But then there are dieticians who would disagree.

For example - water, water is needed by the body, but does it give us calories? If you drink it cold it will take calories from the body to heat it to body temperature. Granted this might be only a few, but nevertheless it does demonstrate the negative calorie effect.

There are many vegetables that provide us with nutrients and vitamins, but cost us more in calories than they give. For example celery; it is a water-rich food and also fiber rich and you guessed it, it is in the negative calorie diet. Carrots are another example.

The overall effect of certain foods in our body is that they take more calories to digest than the foods give us. Hence, they can be placed one of the negative calorie food list.

Negative calorie foods are found all around us. They supply us with healthful vitamins, minerals and other nutrients, but they don't give us any calories. In the digestive processing of these foods, calories are taken away from our bodies.

To be specific a 100 gram piece of broccoli (25 calories) would require 80 calories to digest, so we would see a net loss of 55 calories coming straight from body fat.

So you could call broccoli a fat burning food. Not only is it healthy for you having lots of good nutrients, but it burns fat too. I don't know about you, but from now on I see broccoli in a whole new light.

Natural Foods

Negative calorie foods are natural foods which are water-rich and high in fiber. Many fruits and vegetables fall into this category. These foods provide us with numerous healthful nutrients, beef up our immune system, and provide us with another source of life-sustaining water. And they can actually burn away fat if we eat them appropriately.
